A new controversy has emerged in India’s West Bengal state ahead of the upcoming legislative elections over the revision of the voter list. After the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, about 9 million names have been removed from the voter list, raising concern and criticism.

According to the revised list published by the Election Commission, a large portion of those removed have been marked as absent, relocated, or deceased. However, several million others will need to apply for re-inclusion through special tribunals, which analysts believe may be difficult to resolve before elections begin.

Many, like 73-year-old Nabijan Mondal from Gobindapur village in North 24 Parganas, have suddenly been removed from the voter list. Despite voting for many years, she now fears she will not be able to exercise her voting rights. In her case, spelling variations in names and inconsistencies in documents created complications.

Opposition parties and various organizations have alleged that this process is an attempt to systematically deprive certain groups of voting rights. In particular, it is being claimed that a comparatively higher number of Muslim voters have been removed.

However, the Election Commission of India says the initiative aims to remove fake or ineligible voters and include only genuine voters.

Ruling party leaders of West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress have alleged that the process is being used for political advantage. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says that removing ineligible voters is necessary and no eligible voter will be harmed.

Analysts say women are facing additional difficulties due to this process. Many women have been removed from the list due to name changes after marriage, address changes, or inconsistencies in documents.

Legal experts warn that if these issues are not resolved quickly and transparently, a large number of people may be deprived of voting rights, which could negatively affect the election process.
