South African prominent opposition politician and leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has been sentenced to five years in prison. The court found him guilty in connection with firing a gun at a political rally.

Magistrate Twanet Olivier said that Malema was convicted for illegally carrying a firearm and firing it in public during a rally held in 2018 in a stadium in Eastern Cape province.

Court documents show he was sentenced to five years for illegal possession of a firearm and another two years for ammunition-related offenses, along with fines. The prison sentence may be enforced if fines are not paid.

However, Malema’s lawyers claimed the weapon was not real but a toy and that the incident was part of a “celebration.” They filed an appeal immediately after the verdict, which the court accepted.

Tensions spread outside the courtroom after the verdict, with Malema’s supporters protesting in red clothing demanding the ruling be overturned. They alleged the case was politically motivated.

The court, however, stated that the case is not against any political party but is the trial of an individual’s offense.

Analysts say that if the sentence is upheld, Malema’s position in parliament may be at risk, and his party EFF could face major political pressure.

The ruling has sparked new debate in South African politics and may have significant implications for the country’s future political landscape.
