Popular Hollywood actress Melissa Barrera, known for the “Scream” film series, has said that her career suffered a major setback after she became vocal on social media about the Gaza war. In a recent interview, she openly discussed being allegedly “blacklisted” in the industry and her current situation.
In late 2023, Barrera began posting regularly about the Israeli attacks in Gaza. She called for a ceasefire, shared fundraising information for humanitarian organizations, and criticized the Israeli government.
Following this, production company Spyglass Media Group removed her from “Scream 7.” Her talent agency WME also ended its contract with her around the same time. She claims she did not receive any new job offers for nearly a year afterward.
However, Spyglass Media Group had earlier stated that they do not support any form of hate speech. Barrera rejected the accusation, saying she was speaking in favor of human rights and peace and that it is important to distinguish between governments and people.
In the interview, she said losing work was emotionally difficult and left her uncertain about her future. She added that she felt broken after suddenly losing opportunities despite having dreams of acting.
She is now returning to acting. She is currently performing in the Broadway stage production “Titanique,” where she plays the role of Rose.
Barrera said, “I am now much more stable and at peace. Broadway was a long-time dream for me.”
She also claimed that many people in Hollywood did not publicly support her during the difficult time, although she received private support from some individuals.
She added that some filmmakers helped her return to work, gradually rebuilding her career.
Regarding future plans, she said she is working on establishing her own production company and planning new film projects.
When asked whether taking a political stance affects artists in Hollywood, she said she believes women feel this pressure more strongly.
She also expressed interest in working with colleagues who support human rights and justice.
