PNN News Desk | Dhaka:

Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), stated that there was no foreign involvement in the July popular uprising. Speaking to journalists after giving his statement at the International Crimes Tribunal, he said the movement was a spontaneous resistance by the people and a legitimate step against long-standing violations of public rights.

Nahid said, “There was no conspiracy here. The Awami League government had taken a stance against the people. They opened fire on a peaceful movement and killed people. That is why the public took to the streets to establish their rights.”

He further claimed that Sheikh Hasina, as the party leader, had positioned herself against the people, and therefore, the crimes were not only personal but also committed collectively by the party. He demanded that the Awami League be held accountable as a party.

In response to a question from journalists at the tribunal, he said, “Sheikh Hasina fled to India; she did not go there voluntarily.”

Meanwhile, the prosecution has also hinted that evidence of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations’ involvement is being presented in court. The Chief Prosecutor stated that a decision on holding the party accountable has not yet been made, but it is being considered based on the evidence collected.

Earlier, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former Police Inspector General Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were also made accused in the same case. Mamun has already confessed and provided testimony as a state witness.
