In the first six months of 2026, global cybersecurity conditions have reached a new level of concern. State infrastructure, healthcare systems, educational institutions, technology companies, and ordinary citizens’ personal data have all become primary targets of cybercriminals. Experts say modern conflicts are no longer limited to battlefields; a significant part of them is now being conducted in the digital space.

One of the most widely discussed incidents involved controversy over the United States’ social security database. Allegations claim that the personal data of millions of citizens was transferred to an insecure server, leading to ongoing investigations and legal disputes. The issue has raised fears of one of the largest data breaches in the country’s history.

Meanwhile, in Europe and North America, repeated cyberattacks on water supply systems, power plants, and other critical infrastructure have indicated rising security threats. Security agencies in several countries have warned that such attacks could directly impact public life in the future.

In the context of ongoing tensions in the Middle East, cyber activities linked to Iran-associated hacker groups have also drawn international attention. Several attacks have disrupted major corporate operations, and thousands of devices have reportedly been damaged.

The education sector also suffered major cyberattacks this year. An international education technology platform was hacked, resulting in the theft of data belonging to millions of students and staff. A follow-up attack disrupted exam operations, creating temporary crises for many institutions.

At the same time, attacks on open-source software supply chains have shocked the tech industry. Security researchers say malicious code was inserted into popular software and development tools, putting even major tech companies at risk.

An intrusion into a monitoring system of a U.S. federal investigative agency also sparked widespread concern. Investigators fear that sensitive government data and information related to monitored individuals may have been compromised.

The corporate sector has also faced serious disruption, with several multinational companies forced to shut down online operations for extended periods. Cyberattacks have caused financial losses and delays in financial reporting.

Another major concern for experts is the massive leak of government identification data, including passports and driving licenses. Weaknesses in online services and identity verification systems have exposed personal records of millions of people, increasing risks of identity fraud and financial scams.

Cybersecurity analysts say the events of 2026 clearly show that digital security is no longer just a technical issue; it is a crucial part of national security, economic stability, and citizens’ rights. They emphasize that governments, institutions, and individuals must prioritize cybersecurity immediately.
