The campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara turned tense on Tuesday morning following the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training fighter jet. Outraged by the casualties and injuries, students erupted in protest, demanding the disclosure of the identities of the deceased, an accurate list of the injured, compensation for victims' families, and the decommissioning of unsafe training aircraft.
Around 10:30 AM, interim government legal adviser Asif Nazrul and education adviser Prof. Dr. C.R. Abrar visited the college. The students surrounded them, chanting “fraud, fraud” slogans. Due to the growing pressure, they took shelter in a conference room inside the college building, accompanied by the chief adviser's press secretary Shafiqul Alam and several college teachers. There, 5 to 7 student representatives spoke with the advisers while hundreds continued their protest outside.
Reportedly, one of the key sources of student frustration is the government's delay in announcing the postponement of the HSC exams and the alleged withholding of the actual casualty figures.
Although the protest began at 9:00 AM, authorities from the Diabari Army Camp used loudspeakers to announce a ban on any gatherings or demonstrations. Nevertheless, students gathered on campus and continued protesting for their demands.
According to college authorities, the crash has so far claimed the lives of 27 students, with 78 others undergoing treatment in various hospitals. A help desk has been set up under Building No. 1 to collect and update information about the casualties.
Teacher Afrin said the damaged building was primarily used by the primary section. The exact number of students present during the crash remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, large crowds of locals gathered at the crash site, and numerous guardians arrived searching for their children. Many hostel students were seen leaving the premises.
Latest reports indicate that the advisers are preparing to leave the campus and will soon address the protesting students.
