Many child actors in Hollywood face severe sexual abuse, but Oscar-winning actress Judy Foster has shared her unique experience. She stated that gaining fame and recognition at a young age provided her with a certain level of protection, shielding her from more serious situations.

In a recent interview on the popular U.S. radio show Fresh Air, Foster explained that working in Hollywood as a child required her to understand many new things. She acknowledged facing subtle discrimination and uncomfortable situations professionally, but when asked why she avoided the severe experiences many child actors face, she elaborated.

According to Foster, she reached a position at a very young age where she had a certain degree of power. At just 12 years old, after being nominated for an Oscar for her role in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, her industry credibility and importance increased. She became someone whom people were cautious around because she could expose wrongdoing or influence careers.

Born in 1965, Foster began acting at age three under her mother’s guidance, starting with television commercials. She gained international recognition with a controversial role in Taxi Driver as a young girl, later solidifying her position in films like Freaky Friday and Bugsy Malone.

Foster added that her personality might have kept her away from many risks. She describes herself as outspoken and emotionally controlled, while predators often target the weak, inexperienced, and powerless—unlike her situation.

She believes her acting career taught her mental resilience and self-discipline, which strengthened her over time. From a child actor, she became one of Hollywood’s most influential actresses, winning two Oscars for her roles in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs, laying a strong foundation for her long, successful career.
