Khulna police rescued Food Inspector Sushanta Kumar Majumdar five and a half hours after his abduction. He was found tied up (hands, feet, and eyes) around 12:30 AM on Monday (early Sunday morning) in the field of Azgora BRB High School in Terokhada Upazila.
According to Abul Bashar Mohammad Atikur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (CTSB) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, the kidnappers panicked due to police activity and abandoned him, leading to his rescue.
Sushanta Kumar Majumdar is currently serving as the Food Inspector and In-charge at Khulna City's 4 No. Ghat. His home is in Chitalmari Upazila of Bagerhat district.
Police and eyewitnesses stated that around 7:00 PM yesterday evening, several individuals, identifying themselves as 'police', forcibly took him onto a trawler from the 4 No. Ghat area of Khulna city. A passerby recorded a video of the incident, which showed a struggle, beating, and groaning sounds at one point.
Immediately after the incident, the victim's wife, Madhobi Rani Majumder, filed a written complaint at Khulna Sadar Police Station. In her complaint, she named two individuals, Md. Reza and Babu Mandal, along with three others. She also mentioned that Babu Mandal had previously demanded money from her husband multiple times.
Police further reported that after the abduction, the gang demanded ransom from the victim's family. The family paid some money through mobile banking. A mobile banking agent has been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.
Hawlader Sanwar Hossain Masum, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station, said that multiple police units launched an operation upon receiving the information. He added that due to the police's swift action, the kidnappers abandoned the victim, saving his life. After his rescue, Sushanta Kumar Majumdar was provided with primary medical treatment.
