Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian was slightly injured in an Israeli airstrike during a meeting of the Supreme National Security Council in Tehran on June 15, according to a high-ranking Iranian official.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said the attack was an attempt to topple the government by assassinating the heads of all three branches of power. He told Al Jazeera, “Israel will not get away with this attack for free. They will be held accountable.”
The airstrike occurred around noon, while top officials—including the heads of the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches—were in attendance at the meeting.
The semi-official Fars News Agency released new details about the assassination attempt amid the ongoing 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. These revelations were first publicly confirmed by the Iranian president in an interview on Monday.
According to Fars, the meeting was being held in the basement of a government building in western Tehran when the attack began. To block escape routes, six missiles were fired at the building’s entry and exit points, and air circulation was deliberately disrupted.
Despite a power outage caused by the explosions, officials managed to evacuate safely using a designated emergency exit. President Pezeshkian was among them, sustaining a minor foot injury during the escape.
The news agency also reported that, due to the precision of the enemy's strike, authorities have likely launched an investigation into the possible presence of Israeli spies within Iran.
