In a devastating road accident in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar, a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a covered van has claimed the lives of three people, including a father and son. At least 20 others were injured, most of them passengers of the bus.
The accident happened at 8:00 a.m. on Monday in the Panirchhara area of Rashidnagar Union, on the Cox's Bazar-Chattogram Highway. Victims identified include Habib Ullah (55), son of the late Shafiqul Rahman of Khurulia Dakshin Patli, PM Khali Union, Cox's Bazar Sadar, Riyad (11), Habib Ullah's son and a madrasa student, and Rimjhim Barua (22), daughter of Himangshu Barua of Purba Rajarkul.
Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. According to eyewitnesses, the Purabani passenger bus, heading toward Chattogram, overturned and rolled into a roadside ditch following the collision. Many passengers were trapped under the bus, resulting in fatalities and severe injuries.
Family sources confirmed that Riyad was a student at a Qawmi madrasa in Patiya, and his father was accompanying him when the accident occurred. Tragically, both lost their lives on the spot.
Adding to the sorrow, Rimjhim Barua was scheduled to be married on 6 July. Instead, her life was cut short in this tragic incident.
Police and emergency responders from the Ramu Highway Police, local police station, and Fire Service arrived swiftly at the scene to carry out rescue operations. The accident caused a significant traffic jam along the highway.
The injured have been admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, Ramu Upazila Health Complex, and several private clinics for treatment.
OC Nasir Uddin of the Tulatoli Highway Police Station confirmed the deaths and stated that several of the injured remain in critical condition. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for autopsy, and necessary legal actions are underway.
