The renaming process is underway following student requests and the hall administration’s recommendation, with final resolution pending.
Dhaka University’s ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’ is set to be renamed back to ‘Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’. The matter has already been discussed in the university syndicate based on student petitions and the hall administration’s recommendation. The administration is now awaiting the final resolution.
The university registrar, Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, confirmed the development to The Daily Campus on Friday (29 August). He stated, “The issue was discussed in Monday’s syndicate meeting. After each syndicate discussion, a final deliberation takes place, based on which the decision is made.”
He added, “Since the matter has been thoroughly discussed in the syndicate, the name will be changed. Now, we are just waiting for the final resolution. Once the resolution is approved, the name will be automatically updated.”
Students of the hall submitted the renaming request on 22 January 2025. Residential teachers and assistant residential teachers also supported the proposal.
Originally established in 1988, the hall was named ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’. In 2013, the name was changed to ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’.
Earlier this year, a group of students attempted to change the hall’s nameplate late at night. They removed the ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall’ sign and replaced it with ‘National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall’. During the incident, the front nameplate of the hall was reportedly damaged.
