Three Arrested in Jessore with 36 Gold Bars Worth BDT 78.9 Million

In separate operations, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized gold and mobile phones, detaining three individuals and handing them over to Jessore Kotwali Police Station.

The total weight of the seized gold is 5.334 kilograms, with an estimated market value of approximately BDT 78,953,968, according to Lt. Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui, commander of the Jessore Battalion (49 BGB).

Based on secret intelligence, the BGB conducted two separate operations on Thursday (28 August) in Kodalia and Taraganj markets of Jessore Sadar. At around 6:00 AM, Ashraful Islam Sajid (23) was arrested at Kodalia market, with 2 gold bars (434 grams) and a mobile phone recovered from him.

Later, at 9:30 AM, two more individuals, Zahid Hossain (26) and Sujon Kumar Bappi (34), were detained at Taraganj market, with 34 gold bars (4.9 kilograms) and 4 mobile phones seized.

The BGB stated that the gold bars were cleverly hidden in pants pockets and handbags. Additionally, mobile phones valued at around BDT 64,000, cash of BDT 35,320, and 40 Indian Rupees were recovered.

All seized gold and other items have been deposited in the government treasury according to the law. Following legal procedures, the three detainees were handed over to Jessore Kotwali Police Station.

Lt. Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui noted that the BGB has been actively conducting intelligence and operational activities in border areas to seize weapons, gold, silver, drugs, and smuggled goods for an extended period.
