Dhaka University Student Dies by Suicide

A third-year student of Dhaka University’s Sociology Department has reportedly died by suicide, sending shockwaves through the campus community. The tragic incident occurred on the night of Saturday, June 14, in a residential hall adjacent to the university campus.

According to university sources, the student was found hanging in his dorm room. Classmates reported that after repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered, they alerted hall authorities. Upon breaking down the door, his lifeless body was discovered.

The news first surfaced through a heartfelt Facebook post by a close friend of the deceased, which quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread grief among students and faculty.

Though the exact reason for the suicide is still unclear, preliminary information suggests that the student may have been experiencing mental distress. Possible contributing factors include academic pressure, family issues, or relationship-related struggles, though nothing has been confirmed.

Speaking on the incident, DU Proctor Dr. A.K.M. Golam Rabbani stated:

“This is an extremely heartbreaking and unfortunate incident. We are currently investigating the matter. Support from the university’s Counseling Center will also be arranged.”

Police arrived at the scene and sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities are now questioning family members and friends to uncover the underlying cause of the suicide.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among students, with many calling for urgent attention to mental health services on campus. Students and mental health advocates have emphasized the need for accessible counseling, empathetic support systems, and greater awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
