The office of the Dhaka College Students’ Union (DCSU) has been unlocked after 32 years. On Tuesday, September 16, at noon, the college authorities opened the Students’ Union office, located on the ground floor of the historic building, following students’ demands. The students expressed excitement over the development.
According to the college administration, the Dhaka College Students’ Union building was established in 1990, but the office on the ground floor had remained locked since 1994. Due to the absence of union elections for more than three decades, the building had fallen into neglect.
On-site observations revealed that the interior was filled with dirt, debris, and piles of old papers. Chairs and tables were scattered haphazardly. Roman Jabir, a student of the Economics Department, said, “The DCSU is often called the ‘Third Parliament.’ Seeing the interior in this condition is disheartening. We hope a roadmap for elections will be announced this month.”
The authorities stated that Principal Professor A. K. M. Elias will form a three-member committee to organize the Dhaka College Students’ Union elections. The committee will work this week to publish the union’s constitution and coordinate with all active political student organizations for necessary reforms.
It is noteworthy that the DCSU was last formed in 1993, when the Harun-Zabed panel from the Nationalist Student Party won the elections.
