To ensure transparency in the vote counting of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, Umama Fatema, the Vice President (VP) candidate of the Independent Student Unity Panel, has requested a manual (hand) recount of the votes.
On Monday, she submitted a written application to the Chief Returning Officer. In her application, she requested, “To verify the transparency of the election, I request copies of voter lists from each center, a manual vote count instead of the OMR machine, and that the CCTV footage of voters entering the polling centers be made accessible to students.”
In the DUCSU elections held on September 9, the VP position was won by Sadik Kayem of the United Student Alliance supported by Chhatra Shibir, who received 14,042 votes. Umama Fatema came fourth with 3,389 votes.
During the announcement of the election results, at around 3:15 a.m., Umama Fatema posted on Facebook declaring her rejection of the results. It is still unknown how quickly the university administration will act on her request.
