Students at Chittagong University detained an assistant professor from the Law Department over alleged support for violence and massacres during the July movement. The incident occurred on Saturday (10 January) while the university’s admission examinations were ongoing.

The detained teacher is Hasan Muhammad Roman Shuvo, assistant professor of the Law Department and former assistant proctor. Students alleged that during the anti-government July movement, he supported the acts of violence and collaborated with the then-ruling authorities.

According to university sources, the accused teacher was on campus as an examination invigilator. Although three separate investigations are ongoing against him within the university, he attended the exam based on administrative permission.

When students noticed his presence, members of the Chittagong University Central Student Union (CHAKSU) approached him to detain him. The teacher attempted to escape via a rear path, avoiding the main route in front of the Law Department, but students chased and caught him.

CHAKSU’s Law Secretary Fazle Rabbi Tauhid alleged that Hasan Muhammad Roman Shuvo was directly involved in the July movement violence. During the tenure of the Awami League government, he labeled protesting students as ‘terrorists’ and filed cases against them. Former Law students affected by such cases also confirmed these claims.

Shuvo, however, denied all accusations, stating that he did not participate in any July movement activity, not even silent marches. He claimed that if anyone can prove his involvement, he would accept punishment. He emphasized that, as a law teacher and former judge, he never engaged in illegal activities and played no role in punitive actions against students. According to him, the allegations are baseless and politically motivated.
