On Friday, in response to users’ queries, Grok itself stated that image creation and editing on the X platform would be available only to subscription holders. However, this restriction has not yet been implemented on the separate Grok app, where free image creation was still available at the time of reporting.
Previously, Grok’s image creation feature was open to everyone within a daily limit. Users could upload any person’s photo and edit or artificially generate sexualized or nude images. This led to rapid spread of non-consensual sexualized images of children, actors, models, and well-known figures, sparking global outrage.
In response, both X and Elon Musk publicly condemned Grok’s misuse. They stated that X’s policies against illegal content would remain in effect. Elon Musk also warned that anyone creating illegal content with Grok would face consequences equivalent to directly uploading such content.
Several countries, including the UK, the European Union, and India, have expressed concerns over this feature. The EU recently instructed XAI to retain all records related to Grok. Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Communications directed X to implement necessary changes immediately, warning that the platform could lose legal protection in the country otherwise.
Experts suggest that stricter regulations and policy frameworks from technology companies are now essential to prevent such misuse of artificial intelligence.
