Although Rajshahi University decided to introduce a coding system for evaluating exam scripts, the decision has not been implemented even after 10 months, leading to dissatisfaction and anger among students.

Students complain that if implemented, this system would increase transparency in script evaluation and reduce chances of bias. However, the university administration says the system has not yet been implemented due to technical difficulties.

On July 14 last year, the Academic Council decided that students’ names and roll numbers would be replaced with codes in exam scripts. This would prevent examiners from knowing the identity of students, ensuring more impartial evaluation.

However, despite the passage of time since the decision, the system has not been introduced in any department.

A student of the Social Work Department, Arif Albi, said: “It is really disappointing that the coding system has not been introduced. In the current system, there is a chance of unconscious bias, which can hinder proper evaluation of merit.”

He further said that it is unfortunate that despite the Academic Council’s decision, it has not been implemented, and the administration should quickly remove technical barriers.

Another student of Islamic History and Culture Department, Talha Tamim, said: “The delay has created uncertainty among students. The coding system is very important for transparent and fair evaluation.”

He added that if implemented, it would increase accountability and trust in the university’s education system.

Examination Controller Professor Md. Hasnat Kabir said: “Due to some technical problems, the coding system could not be implemented yet. However, the decision is final.”

He expressed hope that the system will be introduced from the 2025–26 academic year.

Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Farid Uddin Khan said: “Software changes are required. The entire system needs updates including mark input and roll conversion, which is time-consuming.” He added that work is ongoing with the software provider.

It is worth noting that students have long been demanding anonymous script evaluation. Last year, protests under the “RU Reform Movement” included this demand as a key issue. Students believe this system will ensure transparency and fairness in evaluation.
