Coast Guard rescues 4 fishermen kidnapped for ransom in Sundarbans

The Coast Guard rescued four fishermen who had been kidnapped for ransom by the notorious Jahangir gang in the Sundarbans. Acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard carried out an operation yesterday in the Arbouni canal area near the Shibsa River.

Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, the bandits managed to flee, but weapons and ammunition were seized from their hideout. According to Lieutenant Ikra Mohammad Nasim, Executive Officer of Coast Guard warship BCGS Touhid, the Coast Guard fired two blank rounds during the raid. A search of the bandits’ boat led to the recovery of one single-barrel gun, two airguns, and three rounds of live cartridges.

The rescued fishermen are—Mofizul Islam (42), Habibur Rahman (37), Habibur (35), and Shahjahan Gazi (40). They reported that the Jahangir gang had held them hostage for about 10 days, subjecting them to torture while demanding ransom.

Coast Guard officer Lt. Ikra Mohammad Nasim confirmed that no one was arrested in the operation. He added that the rescued fishermen are being prepared to be reunited with their families, while legal procedures are underway.
