A night-long clash broke out yesterday between students of City University and Daffodil International University in Ashulia, leaving more than a hundred students injured. The confrontation — which began after a student was spat on — escalated into widespread violence, with reports of vandalism and arson at several buildings on and around the campuses.
Eyewitnesses said the trouble started on Sunday (26 October) evening when a City University student allegedly spat from a motorcycle and the saliva landed on a student at Daffodil’s residential complex “Bachelor Paradise” in Savar’s Ashulia area. A heated argument and exchange of words quickly followed. Around 9:00 p.m., about fifty City University students reportedly attacked the residence, carrying out extensive vandalism and setting fires.
A video of the attack circulated on social media, after which around 1,000 Daffodil students reportedly gathered and attempted to advance toward the City University students. Police and the proctorial teams tried to bring the situation under control, but tensions continued to rise between both groups. During the clashes, several City University vehicles were smashed and administrative buildings were targeted.
Following the incident, Daffodil students were accused of launching an attack on the City University campus. During the violence, students from both sides rampaged, attacking vehicles and other property. More than a hundred students from both universities were injured; many received first aid while others remain under medical treatment.
City University authorities expressed deep concern over the destruction on campus. City University Pro–VC Dr. Kazi Shahadat Kabir said, “Massive damage has been inflicted on our campus and valuable property has been looted.” Daffodil University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir said some of their students have been detained and that the university is taking necessary steps to secure their release.
The Public University Students Alliance of Bangladesh (PUSAB) has condemned the violence and called for calm, urging students from both universities to maintain peace. PUSAB emphasized that no form of destructive behavior is acceptable and that perpetrators should be brought to justice.
