BlaBlaCar, the long-distance carpooling service, is rapidly gaining popularity in the Indian market. 21-year-old student Labanya Jain, who travels from Noida to Kandla using BlaBlaCar, said he has used the app around 40–50 times. The 120-kilometer journey costs him only ₹500 (about $6), which is significantly cheaper than a private cab.

India has now become BlaBlaCar’s largest market in the world, with about 20 million passengers expected in 2025, a 50% increase compared to last year. When the company closed its local office in India in 2017, such success was largely unexpected. However, usage began increasing after 2022, and currently, BlaBlaCar has around 1.1 million monthly active users in India.

With over 700 million smartphone users in India and a revolution in digital payments, nearly 99% of financial transactions in the country are now digital. Transactions are managed through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), opening new horizons for the economy. These developments, along with improving road infrastructure and better connectivity between small and large cities, have contributed to BlaBlaCar’s rapid growth.

A major reason for BlaBlaCar’s success in India is the limited public transport system and the need for additional vehicles for the country’s 1.4 billion population. Company co-founder Nicolas Brusson said, “Many users said they used to take flights or trains, or sometimes skip the trip entirely, but now they can reach their destination in three hours, enjoying a comfortable ride.”

Although the company has not yet achieved major profitability in India, BlaBlaCar has created new opportunities for users. The platform has generated ₹713 million (about $8 million), even though no service fees have been introduced in India yet.

BlaBlaCar has also introduced a “meeting-point logic” feature for Indian users, which helps determine suitable pickup locations for journeys. This is particularly useful in India, where dedicated carpooling zones like those in France do not exist.

BlaBlaCar is optimistic about its future in India and has set a target of 150 million passengers for the current year.
