Ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin has provided clarification regarding the proposed voter observation agencies amid ongoing controversy. He stated that the list published in newspapers is by no means final. Rather, it has been released to collect information from the public.
Speaking with electronic media journalists at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Monday, the CEC said, “We have not directly registered any organization. Publishing the list means we are seeking feedback from the public. After verification, we will make a final decision.”
Recent media reports have questioned the operations and capacity of many organizations on the preliminary list. Some applicants have even claimed abandoned houses or private residences as offices to qualify as observers. Regarding this, the CEC said, “Media coverage helps us in our work. If the information is verified as correct, we will certainly take action.”
Journalist representatives provided various suggestions to ensure their safety and a transparent environment during the election. Shafique Ahmed, CEO of Ekattor TV, said, “Before and after elections, journalists face pressure from all sides. The Election Commission’s role is crucial for their protection.”
Tauhidul Islam, CNE of Jamuna TV, also raised concerns about the impartial role of law enforcement. He said, “During elections, the forces must be assured that they will not face political pressure in the future due to fulfilling their duties.”
Other discussions in the dialogue included combating fake information, addressing the impact of artificial intelligence, and providing the media with a smooth working environment.
In his remarks, the CEC again promised that the election would be “transparent like a mirror” and emphasized that cooperation from the media is essential. The dialogue was attended by four election commissioners, senior EC officials, and editors and representatives from television channels.
