PNN International Desk | Kathmandu, 15 September:

Nepal plunged into political deadlock after at least 72 people were killed during two days of violent protests. The unrest followed the fall of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government amid allegations of corruption and nepotism. At this critical moment, the country’s youth took a novel approach, relying on virtual voting through the online platform Discord to choose their leader.

The initiative was organized by “Hami Nepal”, a youth group at the center of anti-corruption movements, whose membership has already surpassed 160,000. Over 10,000 young participants engaged in a heated debate on the group’s Discord channel, Youth Against Corruption. To involve even more people, at least 6,000 viewers joined the discussion via a YouTube livestream.

After extensive debates, Q&A sessions, and candidate presentations, five potential leaders emerged:

  • Harka Sampang, Mayor of Dharan

  • Mahavir Pun, founder of Innovation Center

  • Sagar Dhakal, an independent candidate

  • Rastramukta Timalsina, a lawyer known as “Random Nepali”

  • Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice

In the online vote, 73-year-old Sushila Karki emerged victorious and was sworn in on Friday to lead the interim government until March.

Karki, who served as Chief Justice in 2016–17, was known for her anti-corruption stance, including sentencing a minister to jail in 2012 for corruption. This track record made her appealing to the youth voters. After taking office, she addressed the nation: “We will not hold office for more than six months. Power will be handed over once a new parliament is formed.”

During Prime Minister Oli’s tenure, popular social media platforms—including Discord, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter—were banned, sparking widespread youth outrage. On Tuesday, thousands of people protested, setting fire to government and parliamentary buildings. Security forces eventually regained control, but many lives were lost. Following these events, Oli resigned, the parliament was dissolved, and President Ramchandra Paudel announced general elections for March.

Analysts note that electing a prime minister via Discord represents a unique example of democratic practice. While they welcome youth participation, they also warn of risks: potential cyber intrusion or misinformation. To mitigate this, a separate fact-checking room was established on Discord, where young leaders worked to dispel rumors and clarify facts.

Popular Kathmandu mayor and rapper-politician Balen Shah was also a preferred candidate among many youth. Although he could not participate directly, he later expressed support for Karki on social media, positioning himself as a strong contender in the upcoming March elections.

Journalist Pranoy Rana commented: “Democracy has taken a new form in the hands of the Discord generation. Despite risks, it is far more egalitarian—giving everyone an equal chance to speak.”

Anti-corruption activist Padmini Pradhanang added: “The youth have only witnessed looting-centric politics so far. Now it is their responsibility to establish honest governance.”

However, lawyer Regina Basnet noted that the sequence of violent events also caused anxiety among young participants: “What began as a joyous movement turned into bloody conflict. Later, the online prime minister selection process confused many, leaving lingering concerns about the future.”

For the first time in Nepalese history, a new chapter of digital democracy has been initiated by the youth. As interim prime minister, Sushila Karki’s biggest challenges will be restoring trust, ensuring transparent governance, and preparing the country for the upcoming elections.
