A shadow of grief fell over Bollywood on India’s festival of lights, Diwali. Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani passed away on Monday, October 20, at 4:00 PM. He was 84 years old and had been battling illness for a long time. The news of his death was confirmed by his nephew Ashok Asrani.
Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani was an immortal chapter in Indian cinema. From the 1960s onward, he acted in over 350 Hindi films spanning more than five decades. Some of his notable films include Mere Apne, Bawarchi, Chupke Chupke, Abhimaan, Sargam, and Amar Akbar Anthony. His presence in each movie brought laughter and joy to audiences. Known for his comedic roles on screen, in real life, he was calm, composed, and deeply thoughtful.
One of the most memorable contributions of his career was his role as the character “Jila” in the film Sholay. Through this character, Asrani became an iconic figure in Bollywood comedy. His line, “Hum angrezo ke zamaane ke Jila hai,” remains etched in the memories of audiences.
Asrani entered the Mumbai film industry in the 1960s, initially working as a supporting actor. His sharp comedic sense and impeccable timing soon established him as one of Bollywood’s finest comedians. Apart from Hindi films, he also appeared in Gujarati and Punjabi cinema, as well as various television series.
In addition to acting, Asrani tried his hand at directing. In 1977, he directed Chalbaz, which, though not a commercial success, received critical acclaim.
His passing has cast a shadow of sorrow over Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “An era of acting ends. Asrani was not just a comedian; he was our beloved colleague and friend.” Dharmendra said, “The lights of Diwali have dimmed. Farewell, dear Asrani; your laughter will echo in our hearts forever.”
Asrani is survived by his wife, Manojna, and one son. Generations of Bollywood will remember him for his iconic dialogues, acting prowess, and unforgettable humor. Amid the celebrations of Diwali, his passing has brought a somber note, marking the farewell of a beloved face.
