Police recovered the body of a BNP activist, Zainuddin Dhali (52), in Gosairhat upazila of Shariatpur a day after he went missing. His hanging body was recovered Monday (February 16) afternoon from the Kakaishar area of the upazila.
The deceased Zainuddin Dhali was the son of late Moslem Dhali of Khatra area and was known locally as an active BNP worker.
According to police and local sources, he left home Sunday night and did not return. Family members searched various places but could not find him. Around 3:30 pm the following day, locals found his hanging body with a muffler tied around his neck on a mango tree in Kakaishar area of Gosairhat Union. Police were informed.
Gosairhat Police recovered the body and took it to the station. The body has been sent to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Tarik Aziz Mobarak Dhali, member of the Upazila BNP convening committee, said Zainuddin was politically active. He added that he had recently heard of a land dispute involving him.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Sajibul Islam of Gosairhat Police Station said the matter is under investigation. No prior general diary or complaint regarding disappearance had been filed. The actual cause of death can be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report.
The incident has sparked discussion in the area. Police say necessary legal steps are being taken to determine the cause behind the incident.
