A brutal killing of a BNP worker named Mintu Sheikh alias Mithu Sheikh (45) has taken place in Morelganj of Bagerhat. After killing him, miscreants cut off his right hand, creating shock in the area.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in Baulapur village of Hoglapasha Union in the upazila. The deceased Mithu Sheikh was the son of Wahed Sheikh of the same village. He lived with his wife, two sons, and three daughters.
Local sources and police said that in the afternoon, after finishing work in a nearby banana orchard, Mithu was returning home. On the way, a group of miscreants attacked him. The attackers hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, seriously injuring him, and at one point cut off his right hand. Later locals rescued him in a bloodied condition and admitted him to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
After the incident, panic and anger spread throughout the area. Locals demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.
Mehedi Hasan Yead, general secretary of Morelganj Upazila BNP, said that the deceased Mithu Sheikh was a member of Ward 9 BNP of Hoglapasha Union. He demanded a proper investigation and justice.
Police from Morelganj Police Station visited the scene after receiving the news. Officer-in-Charge Md. Mahmudur Rahman said operations have been launched to identify and arrest those involved. Initially, police suspect the incident may have occurred due to a land dispute.
