A BNP leader has allegedly been beaten to death during an arbitration meeting over unpaid money from maize sales in Shankarachandra Union of Chuadanga Sadar upazila. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm on Friday at the Union Parishad complex. Police have arrested one person in connection with the incident.
The deceased, Alimuddin (52), was a resident of Kumirpara village in Shankarachandra Union and was the treasurer of Ward No. 1 BNP.
Local sources said a long-standing dispute existed between Alimuddin’s nephew Ziaur Rahman and a man named Liyakat Ali over approximately 1.4 million taka related to maize trade.
A reconciliation meeting was arranged at the Union Parishad office under the presence of Chairman Mohiul Alam Sujon. During the meeting, an argument broke out and the situation escalated.
It is alleged that Liyakat Ali, his son Alamin, and their associates attacked Alimuddin and beat him severely. He was taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital but died on the way.
The victim’s brother Kalu Mandal demanded justice, saying his brother was beaten publicly during the arbitration.
Chairman Mohiul Alam Sujon said efforts were being made to resolve the financial dispute, but the situation suddenly turned violent.
Locals later detained Liyakat Ali and handed him over to police.
Chuadanga Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said the matter is being investigated seriously. Senior officials, including the police superintendent, visited the scene. A case is being processed and efforts are underway to identify others involved.
