Speaking immediately after Yunus’ address on Thursday afternoon, Salahuddin Ahmed said, “The Chief Adviser, who signed the July National Charter, has in his latest speech violated its core principles and commitments.”
In his speech, the Chief Adviser announced that the national parliamentary election and referendum will be held on the same day, that the parliament will be bicameral, and that upper chamber members will be nominated proportionally based on votes, with the upper chamber’s approval required for constitutional amendments.
Regarding this, BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said, “The formation of the upper chamber had been settled in discussions with the Consensus Commission, with notes of dissent. There is no room to impose a new structure now. The proposal for a ‘Constitutional Reform Council’ was not part of the Commission discussions and is entirely contrary to the July Charter.”
He added that BNP is carefully reviewing the matter and has called an urgent meeting of the standing committee tonight to issue an official response. Political analysts believe the Chief Adviser’s speech may spark a new controversy in the country’s political process.
