Mamun Mia, a sociology student at Chittagong University who was critically injured in a clash between students and local villagers, is still fighting for his life. After a sharp weapon struck his head, part of his skull had to be surgically removed. He is currently admitted to Parkview Hospital in Chattogram city.
On the white bandage wrapped around his head, a warning is clearly written in black ink: “No bone, do not press.” Hospital authorities said the warning was written to prevent anyone from accidentally touching his head.
Parkview Hospital Deputy General Manager Mohammad Humayun Kabir said on Thursday afternoon that Mamun’s condition has slightly improved. He is now able to eat, but his skull has not fully healed yet.
Two other students were also seriously injured in the clashes. Imtiaz Ahmed, a student of International Relations, has been on life support for five consecutive days. Doctors said his level of consciousness remains in a critical state. Naimul Islam, a student of Islamic Studies, was transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment after suffering a vascular injury.
The clashes broke out late Saturday night and continued until Sunday afternoon near Gate No. 2 of Chittagong University. Tension escalated after an incident of assault on a female student, leading to repeated chases and counter-chases between students and locals. At least 200 people, including students, the pro-vice-chancellor, and the proctor, were injured. Local residents also claimed to have been hurt in the violence.
Doctors stated that although Mamun’s condition has improved, he cannot be considered fully recovered until his skull is restored. Tension continues to prevail on the university campus.
