The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has sought detailed information on the bank accounts of former caretaker government advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya. On Monday, the agency sent letters to all banks and financial institutions in the country requesting the information within three working days.
Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya served as an advisor during the interim government formed after the July 2024 popular uprising and the fall of the Awami League government. He initially oversaw the Ministry of Labour and Youth & Sports, later taking charge of Local Government in addition to Youth & Sports. He resigned from the advisor position on December 10 last year and now serves as the spokesperson for the National Citizens Party (NCP).
When asked, he said other former advisors have also had their bank accounts requested. He stated that for transparency, he will voluntarily publish his bank statements.
Previously, the interim government had published advisors’ asset details on February 10, showing Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya’s total assets at BDT 1,534,717 and liabilities at BDT 28,669 as of June 30, 2025. The reason behind BFIU’s request has not been officially explained, though officials speculate it may be part of financial transparency verification.
