AI-powered code review startup Greptile is currently in the process of raising a $30 million Series A round at a $180 million valuation, led by prominent venture capital firm Benchmark and its partner Eric Vishria. However, sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the deal has not yet been finalized, and the terms may still change.
Founded in 2023 by Daksh Gupta, a graduate of Georgia Tech, Greptile participated in the Winter 2024 cohort of Y Combinator. Following the program, the company raised a $4 million seed round led by Initialized Capital.
Gupta previously stated that the AI bot developed by Greptile works like an experienced co-worker. It deeply understands customer code and is capable of detecting errors and bugs that human reviewers might overlook.
However, the code review industry is intensely competitive. Greptile’s main rivals include Graphite, which has already raised a $52 million Series B, and Coderabbit, which secured $16 million in a Series A round.
Amid this fierce competition, Greptile has come under scrutiny for pushing its employees to work extremely long hours. In November 2024, the then 22-year-old Gupta wrote on social media: “There is no work-life balance at Greptile. Employees typically work from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., including Saturdays and sometimes Sundays.” In an interview, Gupta explained, “No one wants to be the second or third best in any software category. To win, you must give 100% anything less is as good as giving nothing.”
Despite its demanding work culture, Greptile’s ability to attract interest from a top-tier VC firm like Benchmark and a solid Series A valuation could prove to be a positive turning point for the company.
Analysts believe that while Greptile is facing intense challenges due to the hyper-competitive landscape and high-pressure work culture, with the right guidance and financial backing, it could set new benchmarks in the AI-powered code review industry. Source: TechCrunch
