Amazon has announced that its Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform, one of the most recognized crowdsourcing services for nearly two decades, will stop accepting new customers starting July 30, 2026.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) said the decision was made after a long internal review. Existing users will continue to access the platform as usual. However, the company will not introduce new features in the future, although it will continue investing in security and stability.

Experts believe this signals uncertainty about the long-term future of Mechanical Turk. While the platform is not shutting down, the closure to new users raises concerns about its sustainability.

Launched in 2005, Mechanical Turk became a marketplace where individuals completed small paid tasks that early AI systems could not perform accurately, such as CAPTCHA solving, image recognition, sentiment analysis, and data classification.

Over time, the platform became a key part of AI development, especially after 2018, when it was widely used for machine learning data annotation tasks. Many companies relied on human workers through MTurk for training neural networks.

However, the platform has long faced criticism over low wages, poor working conditions, and ethical concerns about digital labor. There have also been controversies about companies claiming to use AI while actually relying on human workers behind the scenes.

The rise of large language models further complicated the platform’s role. A 2023 study found that many workers were already using LLM tools to complete tasks, raising questions about data reliability.

Following Amazon’s announcement, online discussions increased, with many Reddit users suggesting that declining demand, bots, and reduced research interest had already weakened the platform’s relevance.

Experts believe the decision could eventually lead to the platform’s gradual phase-out.
