PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said that the Awami League will not be able to participate in the upcoming national election because its activities are suspended under the anti-terrorism law. He made this statement during a meeting with the UK’s International Development Minister Baroness Jenny Chapman on Thursday, November 13. A press release from the Chief Advisor’s Press Wing on Friday confirmed the matter.

The Chief Advisor explained that the party’s activities are legally suspended, and the Election Commission has already removed it from the list of registered political parties. He said, “The upcoming election will be participatory. Nearly one million newly eligible voters will have the opportunity to vote for the first time, something that was not possible in the electoral environment over the past sixteen years.”

He mentioned that the national election will be held in the first half of February next year, emphasizing that it will be conducted on the basis of equal opportunity, participation, and transparency, with the possibility of high voter turnout.

He also said that the July Charter will mark a new chapter for the country. The expectations for change that people had expressed through last year’s July-August uprising are reflected in this charter.

During the meeting, discussions also covered expanding trade with the UK, addressing the Rohingya crisis, and cooperation in aviation and maritime sectors. The Chief Advisor urged political parties to act responsibly in relation to the election, sparking new discussions in the domestic political arena.
