A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver died in public after being beaten in Chittagong city. The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the Midyapara area near Amin Jute Mill under Bayezid Bostami police station. The deceased was identified as Khorshed Alam. He was declared dead by doctors after being taken to the hospital.

According to police and eyewitnesses, at night on the street, three individuals got into a verbal altercation with Khorshed. At one point, he was pushed onto the road and beaten with sticks. Even after falling to the ground, he was not left alone until he became unresponsive. Although people were present nearby, no one intervened.

A CCTV video of the incident spread on social media. The video shows that after Khorshed stopped moving, the attackers left the scene. Later, locals rescued him and took him to the hospital.

OC Jahidul Kabir of Bayezid Bostami police station stated that injuries were found on the victim’s head and face. Analysis of the footage has identified one of the attackers as Md. Hosen, and another person has been arrested. Operations to apprehend others are ongoing.

Preliminary investigations revealed no prior enmity between the deceased and the accused. It is believed that the altercation began over a minor issue—comments about bad breath. Khorshed’s family is preparing to file a case.

It is noteworthy that violent incidents have occurred in the Bayezid Bostami area previously. Recently, a RAB member was killed and several others injured in an operation in Jangal Salimpur under the same police station. The continuous violence in the city is raising security concerns.
