The controversy started when, on Monday night, Professor A-Al Mamun posted on Facebook about female students’ oath-taking photos shared by RAKSU and hall councils. He wrote: “I endorse this personal freedom. Tomorrow I will go to class with the same personal freedom—wearing a two-quarter outfit and carrying a bottle of alcohol. Alcohol is not a drug! I have a license to drink! Some are activists, some are journalists!” His post drew widespread criticism on social media, after which he expressed regret.
In response, Dr. Moniruzzaman attended his class in Islamic attire carrying the Quran. He said, “As a Muslim, I want to attend class according to Islamic guidelines with proper attire and my religious book. I believe every individual has the freedom to wear clothing according to their faith. I do not want any teacher to make controversial statements suggesting it is acceptable to bring alcohol to class. This is not expected from educators in society.”
He added, “No educational institution, whether a university or anywhere else, should allow teachers to bring alcohol into class.” According to him, teachers are regarded as the conscience of society, and such behavior is unacceptable from them.
Through this act, Dr. Moniruzzaman has sent an important message to students, highlighting the significance of religious freedom and respect in society.
