The Appellate Division has granted leave to appeal against the High Court’s decision upholding BNP candidate Aslam Chowdhury’s candidacy in Chattogram-4. Consequently, the publication of election results for this constituency is deferred until the main hearing.
The order was delivered on Tuesday by a five-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.
Jamaat candidate Md. Anwar Siddiqui and Jamuna Bank had separately sought leave to appeal against the High Court ruling. With leave granted, a full appeal hearing will now take place.
During the appeal proceedings, senior lawyers representing both sides presented arguments. The High Court had earlier, on 27 January, dismissed writ petitions challenging Chowdhury’s candidacy, thereby upholding the Returning Officer’s decision of 3 January.
