A total of 25 universities from Bangladesh have been included in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, published by the UK-based education magazine Times Higher Education. Another 10 Bangladeshi institutions that were evaluated but did not receive a ranking position have also been listed, bringing the total number of Bangladeshi universities mentioned in the ranking to 35.

The information comes from the 2027 rankings published on THE’s website on Wednesday (September 30).

This year’s ranking evaluated 2,297 universities across 118 countries. The institutions were assessed based on various indicators, including teaching quality, student-to-staff ratio, research environment and quality, research influence, citations and the presence of international students.

Among Bangladeshi universities, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Daffodil International University (DIU), Jahangirnagar University and North South University are in the 801-1000 ranking band. All four institutions share the same ranking band.

The 1001-1200 band includes Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), BRAC University, Gazipur Agricultural University, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT), Jashore University of Science and Technology, University of Dhaka and University of Rajshahi.

Bangladesh Medical University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and United International University are in the 1201-1400 band.

In addition, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, Independent University Bangladesh, International Islamic University Chittagong, Khulna University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology and University of Chittagong are in the 1401-1600 band.

Two more Bangladeshi universities—East West University and Military Institute of Science and Technology—are in the 1801-2000 ranking band.

Another 10 Bangladeshi universities participated in the assessment but did not meet the requirements for inclusion in the main ranking. They are Asian University for Women, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Dhaka International University, Green University of Bangladesh, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, State University of Bangladesh, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Uttara University, Varendra University and World University of Bangladesh.

THE’s World University Rankings assess overall university performance by placing emphasis on teaching environment, research, research influence, engagement with industry and international outlook. Based on these indicators, the organization determines the comparative position of universities around the world.

The presence of five private universities among Bangladesh’s top 12 institutions in this year’s assessment has also renewed discussion about the participation and position of private higher education institutions from Bangladesh in international university rankings.
