The group, from Nadia district, West Bengal, reportedly walked around four kilometers from the border to Darshana. Having no relatives or known addresses in Bangladesh, they tried to seek shelter but failed. They spent the night under a temporary tent at the Darshana bus stand.
They are a single family, Hindi-speaking, and identified themselves as Muslims from Odisha, India. Their claim states that despite having permanent homes in Odisha, the Indian police detained them on suspicion of being Bangladeshi and confiscated their Aadhaar and ration cards.
Local humanitarians, including Tanvir Onik of the Chuadanga Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, provided blankets, food, and shelter. Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel rescued them and took them to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan stated that some were unwell and were prioritized for treatment before further administrative steps.
