Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained 11 Rohingyas while they were attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally through the Sonahat land port in Bhurungamari Upazila, Kurigram. The incident took place on Friday (October 17) around 6:00 AM when a BGB patrol team at the Sonahat camp apprehended them.
Among those detained are Robiul Islam (24) and Razia Begum (21) from Kutupalong camp in Ukhiya, a two-and-a-half-year-old child Nur Sahida, Shafiullah (18), Nur Nabi (15), Amina Begum (35) from Balukhali camp, Abdul Aziz (15), Rifa Khatun (9), Abu (7), Safa (6), and Iman Ali and Ismail Azad (48) from Kalatali.
Sources said that the detainees had gone to India about eight years ago in search of work and were living in Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad. Currently, their other family members are residing in Ukhiya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
Al Helal Mahmud, Officer-in-Charge of Bhurungamari Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that the identities of the detained Rohingyas are being verified and necessary legal action will be taken.
BGB has announced that it has increased strict surveillance to prevent illegal border crossings and will take action against those who violate the law.
