The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an Indian citizen in Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar district on charges of illegally entering Bangladesh after crossing the border. The arrest was made on Wednesday night from the Madhabkunda area of the upazila.
The arrested individual has been identified as Md. Ali Hossain (32), a resident of South Kefti village under Patharkandi Police Station in Karimganj district of Assam, India, according to BGB.
According to BGB sources, members of the BGB-52 Battalion launched a special operation after receiving information about illegal border crossing by an Indian national. In the operation, he was detained from the Madhabkunda area under the jurisdiction of BOC Tila BOP, located about three kilometers inside Bangladesh from the zero line of the border.
After his arrest, BGB verified his documents and confirmed his Indian nationality. During the search, Indian Election Commission ID, Aadhaar card, and tax identification documents were recovered from him.
During preliminary interrogation, Ali Hossain claimed he entered Bangladesh for mobile phone display-related business purposes. However, authorities said he crossed the border illegally without any valid travel documents or permission.
Lieutenant Colonel Ataur Rahman, commander of BGB-52 Battalion, confirmed the detention and said the man admitted his identity. Legal procedures are underway regarding the incident.
Authorities also said surveillance and patrol activities have been strengthened in the border area to prevent illegal entry and smuggling.
