33 Firearms Licenses of 25 People Cancelled in Jhalakathi, Weapons and Ammunition to Be Seized

To ensure public safety, the district administration of Jhalakathi has cancelled 33 firearms licenses belonging to 25 licensed individuals. Authorities have also ordered the seizure of the firearms and ammunition in favor of the state.

According to district administration sources, the decision was taken through an official order signed by Deputy Commissioner Md. Momin Uddin on June 4. The affected individuals received official notices on Wednesday.

The order stated that the decision was made based on recommendations from a government-formed verification committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs, in accordance with existing laws and regulations. Public security and law-and-order considerations were cited as the main reasons.

Among those affected are leaders and activists of various political parties, former public representatives, and businessmen. The list includes members associated with the banned political activities of Awami League and Jubo League, as well as a central leader of the Jatiya Party and individuals from different professions.

According to official data, the cancelled licenses include .22 and .32 bore pistols, 12-bore shotguns, and other firearms. In several cases, multiple weapons licenses belonging to one individual were revoked.

Reacting to the decision, Jatiya Party central leader M.A. Quddus Khan said he legally obtained his firearm license for business-related security needs. He claimed the decision was politically influenced and unfair.

However, Deputy Commissioner Md. Momin Uddin stated that the decision was taken unanimously based on the committee’s recommendation. He added that confiscation of weapons and ammunition is being processed.

The move is seen as part of efforts to strengthen law and order in the district.
