Zohraan Mamdani has made history in New York, the largest city in the United States. By winning Tuesday’s election, he is set to become the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian-born mayor, and the first African-born mayor.

At 34 years old, this political victory marks a new milestone in U.S. politics. With nearly 90% of votes counted, Mamdani received 1,033,471 votes, while his opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, received 852,032 votes. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received about 7% of the total votes.

After his victory, an elated Mamdani addressed supporters: “Tonight we have made the impossible possible. The people of New York have voted for change—a new kind of politics, for an affordable city.”

He added, “I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist, and I will never apologize for that.” At his victory speech held at the Paramount Theatre in Brooklyn, Mamdani said, “Friends, we have defeated a political dynasty. New York will now be a city where Islamophobia cannot win an election.” He pledged to usher in “a new era” with all New Yorkers, including Jews and Muslims.

Bronx social worker Joshua Wilson said, “During Trump’s second term, all of America is watching New York. Mamdani is young, new, and bringing a message of real change.”

Meanwhile, 68-year-old Lucy Cordero said, “We’ve seen Cuomo long enough. Now it’s time for new leadership. Mamdani is young, honest, and hopeful.”

Bangladeshi-descendant driver Iftikhar Khan said, “My family really likes Mamdani. They told me to vote for him, so I did.” He added that Mamdani’s victory is a symbol of “a new political awakening” for Muslim and South Asian communities.

As the newly elected mayor, Mamdani has announced policies including free public transportation, universal childcare, and rent stabilization. To fund these initiatives, he plans to increase taxes on the wealthy and restructure corporate taxes.

However, political analysts note that implementing these measures will require balancing work with the state legislature and moderate Democrats.

Criticizing Trump’s immigration policies, Mamdani said, “New York is a city of immigrants—and this city will be run by an immigrant starting today.”

He warned, “President Trump, if you want to hurt anyone, you will have to face all of us.”

Zohraan Mamdani will officially assume office as New York City mayor on January 1.
