In a tragic incident in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila, a young woman was allegedly murdered by her husband, Md. Nurul Islam (35). The chilling crime came to light early Wednesday morning in Madhyapara village of Bormi Union, when neighbors rushed to the house after hearing the cries of the couple’s four-month-old baby. Enraged by the killing, locals later set fire to the house. Nurul Islam is currently on the run.
According to locals, the victim, 20-year-old Sweety Akter, originally from Chakua village in Mymensingh district, was murdered late Tuesday night. She had been married to Nurul Islam for about a year and a half, following a romantic relationship. However, since the marriage, she had been subjected to ongoing physical and mental abuse.
Relatives claim that Nurul was heavily involved in drug use and trafficking and frequently assaulted Sweety over money. Her uncle, Jasim Sheikh, said, “After her mother died when she was young, we raised her with great difficulty. She was studying. But after the marriage, she endured constant abuse. Now she couldn’t take it anymore, and he beat her to death.”
Sweety’s aunt, Aklima, added, “The four-month-old baby is crying endlessly for his mother’s milk. No human being could do something so cruel.”
Neighbors reported that late at night they heard the baby crying and became suspicious. When they entered Nurul Islam’s home, they found Sweety’s lifeless body, covered in injuries, with severe wounds on her head and legs. The baby also had bloodstains on him.
As news of the incident spread, angry villagers torched the house early Wednesday morning.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdul Bariq confirmed that police recovered the body shortly after being informed. “There were multiple injury marks on the body, along with signs of strangulation,” he said. Sweety’s mother-in-law, Jubaida Khatun (52), has been detained. Nurul Islam already has three drug-related cases against him.
The OC further stated, “Nurul Islam fled immediately after the incident. We are continuing efforts to arrest him. A murder case is being filed.”
Now, the couple’s infant son is left without a mother. Once cradled in her arms, he must now grow up in a world without her. The tragedy raises serious questions about how society and the state will protect and support such vulnerable children.
