Yemen’s main southern separatist group, the Southern Transitional Council (STC), has decided to dissolve itself following discussions in Saudi Arabia. General Secretary Abdulrahman Al-Subaihi announced on Yemeni television on Friday that the decision was made to maintain peace and security in the south and ensure safety for neighboring countries.
He praised Saudi Arabia’s acceptable measures and problem-solving, which helped meet the needs of southern residents.
However, no response has yet been received from STC members who did not participate in the Saudi discussions. Sources report that after disagreements between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, a split emerged within the STC. In December, STC conducted operations against Saudi-backed Yemeni forces, leading to this situation.
On Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition reported that STC leader Aidarus Al-Zubaidi fled to the UAE without attending the Saudi discussions, with allegations that UAE assisted his departure.
