Xi Jinping to welcome Putin in Beijing amid US–China tensions

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing. The visit comes at a time of global instability marked by trade tensions, war, and energy crises.

The meeting is being described by both countries as another example of their long-standing “all-weather partnership.”

This two-day visit is Putin’s 25th state visit to China. It comes just days after a high-profile China visit by former US President Donald Trump.

Analysts say China is using such diplomatic engagements to project itself as a stable and predictable power, while the United States faces pressure from multiple global crises.

Both Russia and China say their relationship is based on a strong strategic partnership. Western countries are increasing pressure on Russia over the Ukraine war, while China continues to present itself as a neutral mediator.

However, Western analysts argue that China is in practice providing diplomatic support, economic assistance, and limited technological cooperation to Russia.

Energy cooperation is expected to be a key topic in the talks, particularly the “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline project.

Russia has already proposed additional oil supplies to China. In 2025, both countries agreed to supply an additional 2.5 million tons of oil per year via Kazakhstan.

Despite pricing issues, discussions on long-term supply agreements are expected to move forward.

China remains a major energy buyer for Russia despite US and EU sanctions. China, however, insists it does not provide military assistance and maintains strict controls on dual-use technology exports.

Experts say the Xi–Putin meeting will send a strong geopolitical message about the durability of their strategic ties.

Analysts also believe the meeting signals China’s attempt to position itself as a center of global stability.

At a time of global uncertainty, the Xi–Putin meeting is expected to add a new dimension to international diplomacy.
