Three people were killed in a gun attack at a mosque in San Diego, California, USA. Police said the attack was carried out by two teenage suspects, who later died by suicide.

The incident took place Monday morning at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Just two hours before the attack, the mother of one suspect informed police that her son had run away from home and was possibly at risk of suicide.

Police said they were already searching for the two suspects and were nearby during the attack. Three victims were found shot in front of the mosque.

Shortly afterward, another shooting incident was reported nearby. Investigators found that the attackers fired at a landscape worker from a vehicle, but the person was unharmed.

Police later found the bodies of two suspects aged 17 and 18 inside a car a few blocks from the mosque. It is believed they died by suicide.

Authorities said the motive is still unclear. However, because the mosque was targeted, it is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

A note written by one suspect contained “hate speech,” but it did not mention a specific target or location.

One of the victims was a mosque security guard. Officials said his bravery likely prevented further casualties.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said: “His actions were heroic. He undoubtedly saved many lives.”

The FBI said all aspects of the incident are under investigation. Children and students were present in the mosque during the attack, and nearby schools were placed under lockdown.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire before police arrived quickly at the scene.

California Governor Gavin Newsom described it as a “horrific attack” and said violence in places of worship will not be tolerated.

The US President also described the incident as a “tragic situation” and promised an investigation.

The mosque authorities said it was a place of worship, not a battlefield. They expressed deep concern over such attacks, especially ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
