The World Bank's new Vice President for the South Asia region, Johannes Jatt, arrived in Dhaka today, Saturday, for a four-day visit. This marks his first official visit since taking office on July 1.
According to a press release from the World Bank, Jatt is scheduled to meet with the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, the Finance Adviser, the Bangladesh Bank Governor, as well as various policymakers and representatives from the private sector.
In the press release, Johannes Jatt stated, "I have built a wonderful bond with the people of this country that is deeply embedded in my heart. The resilience, creativity, and strong resolve of the Bangladeshi people to build a better future for their children truly impresses me."
He added that he returned with a great desire to see firsthand the extraordinary changes that have occurred in Bangladesh over the past 10 years. Jatt also said the World Bank is committed to helping Bangladesh maintain sustainable and inclusive growth and create better employment opportunities for the approximately two million young people who enter the job market each year.
A Dutch citizen, Johannes Jatt joined the World Bank in 1999. His most recent position was as the World Bank's Country Director in Brazil. Prior to that, he served as the Country Director in Bangladesh from 2013 to 2015. He has also held Country Director roles in Turkey, Comoros, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, and Somalia.
