PNN News Desk | Mymensingh:
On Monday (October 13), workers of Shepherd Group in the Kathali area of Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh, blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to demand the payment of overdue wages and the fulfillment of 10 other demands. During the blockade, long traffic jams formed on both sides of the highway, causing severe inconvenience to travelers and the general public.
Local administration and police arrived at the scene after receiving reports and held discussions with the workers. With assurances from the administration, the workers lifted the blockade, and traffic gradually returned to normal.
The workers stated that their wages for September have not yet been paid. In addition, they are demanding timely monthly wage payments, maintaining the overtime rate at 68%, an increase in attendance bonuses, a rise in the lunch allowance, and the prompt payment of retirement pensions and fund dues.
The workers also complained that their living conditions have become increasingly difficult due to the reduction of various benefits over time. They warned that if their demands are not met quickly as promised by the administration, they will resort to protests again.
The factory management has stated that they are trying to resolve the issue through discussions with the workers, with the help of the military and local administration. They have planned to pay the September wages by the 20th of this month.
