A housewife was tied to a tree and beaten in Roumari upazila of Kurigram over allegations of stealing bitter gourds. The incident has sparked widespread criticism after a video of it went viral on social media. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (April 14) in Bongshipara village of Dantbhanga union.

According to local sources, the 41-year-old woman was caught while allegedly collecting bitter gourds from a farmer’s field. It is claimed that a sack full of bitter gourds was found in her possession. Her family was informed, and her husband arrived at the scene around 9 am.

In the viral video, the woman is seen tied to a tree with a rope used for cattle. Several people were standing nearby holding sticks, and some were recording the incident on their mobile phones. At one point, her husband beat her with a stick. Despite her screams, no one came forward to rescue her.

The landowner, Farhad Hossain, said that vegetables were frequently being stolen from his field, so surveillance had been increased. The woman was caught with bitter gourds in the morning, and her husband was called. He then allegedly beat her.

UP member Abul Hossain said the incident was unfortunate. Even if she was detained, such abuse is completely unacceptable.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Roumari Police Station, Kawsar Ali, said the video has come to their attention. Tying someone to a tree and beating them is completely illegal. Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is filed.

The incident has triggered strong reactions in the local area, with demands for action against those responsible.
