A 19-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her husband after she repeatedly urged him to stop consuming and selling drugs. Following a dispute over the issue, the woman had left her husband's home and moved to her father's house.
Later, she was reportedly called back to her husband's residence on the pretext of resolving their marital problems. After family members and relatives left following an apparent reconciliation, another argument reportedly broke out between the couple. At one point, the husband allegedly attacked his wife with a sharp weapon, injuring her neck and leaving her in a nearby pond.
The deceased has been identified as Lamia Brishti, 19. Police have detained her husband, Rabiuul Chhoial, in connection with the incident.
According to local sources, Lamia had urged Rabiuul to give up drug consumption and trafficking approximately one week before the incident. However, when her husband refused to abandon his involvement with drugs, she reportedly informed him that she wanted a divorce and subsequently left for her father's house.
On Monday (November 2), Lamia was called to her husband's residence on the pretext of settling their family dispute. Family members and relatives from both sides reportedly gathered at the house and attempted to resolve the conflict between the couple.
After discussions, those present apparently believed that the dispute had been settled and gradually left the house.
However, according to local sources, another heated argument broke out between Rabiuul and Lamia after the relatives had departed.
At one stage, Rabiuul allegedly took his wife to a nearby pond beside their house. There, he reportedly attacked her neck with a sharp weapon before throwing her into the pond and fleeing the scene.
Later, Lamia's younger brother, Obaidul Madbar, went looking for her. During the search, he found her lying face down in a nearby pond.
He immediately rescued her and attempted to take her to a hospital for treatment. However, she reportedly died on the way.
The incident has triggered widespread grief, anger and shock in the local community. Residents expressed disbelief over the death of the young woman, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Gosairhat Circle) Shamchul Arefin said preliminary information suggested that Rabiuul Chhoial had killed his wife, Lamia Brishti, by striking her neck with a sharp knife following a marital dispute.
He confirmed that the accused husband had been detained in connection with the murder.
The police official further stated that investigators were planning to seek remand through the court to question the accused and gather further information about the incident.
The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
Police said the circumstances behind the incident and other aspects of the alleged murder were being investigated to establish the exact sequence of events.
